Wilco and Noortje are in their ninth season on the farm that is owned by Arthur and Helen Blom, which is also home to 500 cross-bred cows. It is Wilco and Noortje fourth season as sharemilkers. The cows are a three-way cross between a Holstein/Jersey and either a Brown Swiss, Dutch Friesian or Red Holstein with the progeny mated back to a Holstein again. Samen NZ and CRV pro- vide the genetics for the herd. The Bloms had the vision to build the herd home about twelve years ago and while the herd home accommodates 400 cows, with the balance going to a nearby run-off, an extension will be built in time for next winter to accommodate the entire herd. Located just out of Lumsden, the 176-hectare effective farm is reasonably flat with clay soils that suffer from Southland winters that can be tradition- ally wet. Wilco says that by the second half of May till the end of June the cows are being milked from the barn because the paddocks are too wet to graze them. All cows are usually dried off by the end of June. The cows are a three-way cross between a Holstein/Jersey and either a Brown Swiss, Dutch Friesian or Red Holstein with the progeny mated back to a Holstein again.
