That person is Carl’s sister Paula Hinton who did a parts apprenticeship in 2011 then went farming for a couple of years before coming back to join the business. There’s no question that this is a family affair with Carl’s wife Nicola now running all the accounts and finance side of things. “My wife actually owned her own business, a power tool shop of all things,” says Carl with a laugh, “so as soon as Mum got sick she sold that and came in and helped her and eventually took over. Mum would be really proud of us. She really deserves the bulk of the credit for getting us to where we are now, we wouldn’t be here without her sleepless nights and hard work.” The Hintons are community players and Fieldtorque Taranaki supports everything from school calf days and the local rugby club to events at the Stratford Speedway. “Since we’re the only Taranaki Tractor and Ag Dealership that’s locally owned, because all the others are corporate owned, people know that when they spend their money with us it goes back into the community,” says Carl. Although Carl’s father David has stepped back from the business their old habit of working to- gether was hard to break and together they’ve built a museum on the family farm. “We’re so passionate for our product that we’ve collected a whole range of vintage Massey Ferguson tractors and put them on display,” explains Carl. So if you happen to be a tractor enthusiast and you’re driving through Stratford you might like to make an appointment to check them out.
