THREE OF THE BEST FROM AGRICOM ENSURE SUCCESS WITH THESE STRONG PERFORMING AND PROVEN RYEGRASSES For high impact pasture growth. PROUD TO SUPPLY NORTHLAND SEED & SUPPLIES 1997 LTD With its core business investing in the research, development, and marketing of forage options and the advancement of endophyte technology, Agricom has had a relationship with Northland Seed and Supplies for about 25 years. Through these early years, Phil and Julie Hawkins saw Agricom making significant investment into Northland for plant breeding and trialing of novel endophytes and alternative grass species such as Tall Fescue and Cocksfoot. Agricom upper North Island territory manager Cassey Edgcombe says the Northland environment is super challenging, with hot dry summers but very wet winters. Insects are rife, and Phil and Julie found the insect protection they were looking for with the AR37 novel endophyte which produces a unique type of alkaloid not found in any other ryegrass/endophyte combination. “AR37 has resistance to more pasture insects than any other ryegrass endophyte commercially available,” Cassey says. Phil and Julie also found Agricom’s ONE50 to be a proven, productive, and persistent perennial ryegrass, providing a robust feeding platform. ONE50 is a diploid cultivar made up of a cross of elite genetics including north-west Spanish material and plants screened in Northland. It has very good persistence and tolerance to Northland’s hot, dry summers, and is a late heading ryegrass with a flush of growth occurring towards mid to late spring, with excellent summer growth carrying on into the autumn and winter, particularly with AR37. “ONE50 has been New Zealand’s largest selling perennial ryegrass for a number of years, and is one of the most widely tested ryegrasses nationwide,” Cassey says. “It has been in the market for 15 years and Northland Seed and Supplies owners Daniel Hawkins and Mark Dunham still support it very actively today, based on its strong reputation and its awesome performance in Northland.” Daniel and Mark have a robust trust relationship with Agricom which is based not only on Phil and Julie’s work with the supplier but also Mark having been heavily involved with the Agricom brand in Australia. Their trust in Agricom products puts them on the front foot when it comes to uptaking new varieties, and today Daniel and Mark are also using the most modern varieties of hybrid ryegrass and perennial ryegrass, Mohaka and Legion. Mohaka is a dense, high quality hybrid ryegrass, available with AR37 or AR1 endophyte. It was bred for improved early growth and cool season activity over the long rotation tetraploid Ohau. A broader leaved, well tillered hybrid suited to two to three year pastures, Mohaka is ideal for undersowing programmes as well as short term finishing pastures, runoff pastures, and supplementary systems. Legion is an all region, all season, complete all rounder perennial ryegrass, available with AR37 and AR1 endophyte. It was bred solely from late heading perennial ryegrass plants that have been individually screened for persistence, rust tolerance, and vigour in not only Northland but also in Canterbury, Palmerston North, and the Waikato. With very good tiller size and leaf length, very low aftermath seeding, and excellent summer leafiness, Legion provides excellent density for periods of set stocking and winter, as well as outstanding summer, autumn, and winter growth. Cassey says the Northland environment is only set to become more challenging, so the more Agricom can invest in plant breeding and trialing in Northland, the better.
