They’d been looking for something on their own in early 2017 when Steve’s parents, Jeff and Glenys, approached them to suggest that they pool their money and buy something together. His parents had been dairy farming while Steve grew up but at that time they were on a kiwifruit orchard in Te Puke. A diagnosis of early onset Parkinsons for Steve’s father was the catalyst for their latest venture which takes the pressure off Jeff and Glenys while at the same time gives Steve and Paula an opportunity. After extensive research looking at farms around Bay of Plenty, Waikato and the Central Plateau, and fully aware of the regulations around the corner, they found a farm they gured they could make work although not everyone agreed. “We were told by a land agent not to come into the Rotorua catchment, but to be honest we’ve seen it as an opportunity,” says Steve. Doing their due diligence the Holdems worked with the council to make sure that they knew exactly what was in store. “We worked out exactly what we could do, and when, and how and what it would look like.” says Steve. “This catchment requires a reduction of nitrogen leaching of 35% by 2032 from what was allowed in the early 2000’s, in ve-year increments, starting with the year resource consent was issued in 2017.” Holdem’s pool their resources together • to page 52 Proud to support Holdem Farm Contact your local CRV Sales Consultant on 0800 262 733 or visit www.crv4all.co.nz We Specialise in… • Accounting • Succession Planning • Taxation • Feasibility Studies • Budgeting and Forecasting • Honest Appraisal and Advice • Ownership and Business Structures • Share Valuations • Secretarial Services Ph: 06 278 5058 | 67 High Street PO Box 141 Hawera 4640 www.harristaylor.co.nz HarrisTaylor Ltd Positive Action Positive Results
