Being bold to invest in the company’s own eet of milk tankers and milk processing equipment such as cream seperators along with a cyncronised upgrade of plant meant the factory could now pick-up raw milk from its local supplier farmers without full reliance on buying milk from other dairy companies. “Back then we weren’t ready to process milk on a continuous basis but now we have locked in longterm contracts to achieve exibility and capability. Today, we are able to process daily up to one million litres of milk.” Yashili’s plant capacity has been future-proofed for the next ve years at least, spurring David to encourage direct supply from more local suppliers. “We would love to talk with farmers within an 100km radius of our factory about supplying milk to us. By keeping within this circle we’re able to reduce transport costs and pass on better nancial returns to our suppliers.” Key to how well the journey has gone to date David says is a strong and committed leadership team, all with the eyes on the same goals and with a vested professional interest in seeing the business thrive. David says that team is working hard to overcome the ‘challenging’ recruitment environment, many large-scale businesses are experiencing in these early post-covid days. “It is the genuine lack of talent and people who are willing to work as a whole in New Zealand that is most concerning. It’s not speci c to our business but experienced across many sectors. Luckily we are okay at the moment. We’re suf ciently staffed but its not ideal at the professional level.” • to page 98 The Yashili New Zealand plant boasts globally best-in-class facilities.
