Richard Loader Kelly Deeks If cows could talk, in between happily chewing their cud they would tell you there is so much to love about Advanced Dairy Barns’ warm and cosy wintering barns. Out of the wind and the rain, they can get a tickle and a massage from one of the automated scratchers inside the shed, or have a rest on the soft latex mattress. Mother Nature also loves the barns that take the cows off the winter wet and puggy paddocks, and ef uent away from the precious waterways. Founders Justin and Rodger Short says farmers have fallen in love with them too. “Farmers soon nd there are some quite big margins to be made over and above conventional farming, with feed savings of around 15%. The cows are warmer and don’t require as much feed and secondly the feed is 100% utilised, whereas out on the paddock 30 – 40% is trampled into the ground. Longer lactations periods can also be achieved with the extra milk soon paying for the shed.” A sister company to Winton Engineering in Southland, Advanced Dairy Barns was born in 2006 out of a customer’s request to build a wintering barn based on a Dutch design. Rodger says one thing led to another and word-of-mouth soon saw more orders coming in from Southland dairy farmers, motivated to address the region’s environmental issues. “We improved the design to cater for New Zealand’s larger herds, branded under Advanced Dairy Barns Ltd. Fairly early on we began to import the prefabricated hot dip galvanised steelwork from China.” The latest European cooling technology is now available at Dairycool from PureCool, with its high performance chilling systems which performs both on-demand snap chilling and maintenance cooling to multiple milk vats. With free hot water production and high ef ciency, the PureCool range of chillers are the future of milk cooling in New Zealand. “This technology offers industry leading energy ef ciency,” says Dairycool Sales Manager Lee Gilbert. “Free hot water is only the beginning. The PureCool chilling system replaces all other refrigeration systems on farm by snap chilling milk to ve degrees Celsius and maintaining this temperature across multiple vats. The nutritional quality of milk is preserved to the highest possible standard.” Rapid cooling means milk solids retain their natural qualities, and this is essential for producing premium dairy products to the world. “Greenhouse gas reduction is an important factor when considering your milk cooling, and Dairycool is committed to being part of the solution. The PureCool system not only utilises more eco-friendly refrigerant but also requires a remarkably small amount of it.” As a result, lifecycle costs and emissions are signi cantly minimised, with the total refrigerant volume needed for milk cooling reduced by up to 80% compared to traditional systems. This combination of low refrigerant volume and high ef ciency sets the PureCool system apart from anything else available on the market today. Waste heat from the cooling process produces hot water up to 60 degrees Celsius for free, further reducing shed running costs. Integrated remote monitoring is standard and Dairycool engineers are noti ed of alerts directly. As the preferred service provider to more than 850 dairy farms, Dairycool leads the industry in DAIRY SERVICES » Advanced Dairy Barns Ltd / Dairycool Ltd Contracts with the Chinese fabricators have been in place for many years now with a rigorous quality control system that guarantees the product quality will be top line. “That has been tested on several occasions over the years, and we have been able to demonstrate that the product is superior. We’re also very ef cient. Everything that’s in our sheds we import directly ourselves, and that’s where we have the competitive edge. Even the bedding, we import that directly from the manufacturer in Italy or Germany.” Labour constraints means that Advanced Dairy Barns provides a full design-and-build turnkey offering for two barns per year within the Southland / South Otago regions, complemented with a complete kitset package to the clients’ builders beyond that and throughout other areas in New Zealand. “Barns range from 90m by 36.5 (350 – 400 cows), and go all the way up to 195m by 36.5m (875 cows). But we’ve built a 200m x 70m barn (1680 cows) which was effectively two barns side-by-side with a roof right over the top. That building also housed 24 milking robots, and the cows stayed in that shed all year round. We provided the area and concrete oor to house the robots, as well as the rail fencing and gates to get the cows to the robots.” While winter barns are Advanced Dairy Barns main focus, the company has also been asked to design and provide kitsets for other sectors including a business growing medicinal marijuana, a deer wintering and milking shed and a factory for constructing prefabricated homes. dairy farm refrigeration with a proven track record for exceptional service that only a locally owned business can provide. Stocking the widest range of milk systems in New Zealand and a full parts inventory to support its 24/7 fault service, Dairycool works closely with all dairy companies to take the hassle out of milk cooling, so your milk stays cold and t for purpose. “We have a dedicated 24/7 breakdown service and an extensive parts inventory so we are readily available to support our clients’ refrigeration needs,” Lee says. “Our highly experienced and quali ed team installs, maintains and repairs all aspects of dairy shed refrigeration, including plumbing and electrical connections for full turnkey projects which maximise ef ciency at a highly competitive price.” Routine maintenance of refrigeration assets is essential for optimising performance and addressing minor issues before they develop into major problems. “In nearly all cases, the improved ef ciency of a well-maintained refrigeration unit will more than justify the investment in our discounted service programme,” Lee says. “As mechanical systems, refrigeration units operate at peak ef ciency and enjoy a signi cantly longer life span when they receive regular maintenance.” Dairycool’s comprehensive service program includes an annual or biannual 30-point inspection for each unit along with coil cleaning, necessary lter replacements, and complete refrigeration leak testing. Additionally, valves and agitators, probes, connections, and controllers are thoroughly inspected to achieve optimal functionality across all components. Dairycool is proud of the strong client relationships it has built over the past 20 plus years and as technology and milk production continues to evolve, its clients can count on Dairycool to offer the right products, advice, and support to keep their milk cool now and in the future.
