Operated by the Birchall family, the approach has been driven by the next generation’s desire to address climate challenges and environmental pressures facing lake catchments. “We sat around the table and realised that if we don’t start doing something different we probably won’t be here much longer,” says Shane Birchall. The change in direction has been spearheaded by Megan Schutt, Shane and June’s daughter, who has taken responsibility for the herd and environmental management. Diversifying pastures with resilient species including plantain, chicory, fescue, cocksfoot, clovers, and timothy - plants with varying rooting depths – has resulted in natural nitrogen fixation and drought resistance. “The multi-species approach has delivered really great results. Different plants dry out and grow at varying temperatures and soil moisture levels, providing resilience during summer droughts and winter wet periods. The farm now grazes to higher levels, leaving protective blankets on soils that reduce pugging and maintain soil temperature regulation,” explains Megan. The farm has also embraced multi-species crops, using direct drilling with no tillage in October before grazing in February during typically dry periods. Megan says this targets areas unsuitable for traditional mowing, maximising land utilisation and Operated by the Birchall family, the approach has been driven by the next generation’s desire to address climate challenges. 07 377 6380 | info@bfa.co.nz | www.bfa.co.nz Partner with BFA and let our expert agri advisory team help you achieve awardwinning results in your farming business.
