NZ Dairy Spring 2025

Karen Phelps In the heart of Waikato’s dairy country, Tractortech has quietly become a vital partner to the region’s farmers, providing trusted tractor servicing and repairs since 2012. As dairy continues to be a cornerstone of Waikato’s economy and future growth, local companies like Tractortech are stepping up to meet the industry’s evolving machinery needs with hands-on expertise, quick response times, and a genuine commitment to farmers. Director Nigel Ross knows the importance of tractors and machinery on dairy farms firsthand. Tractortech began operating 13 years ago, spotting a gap in the market for a reliable, independent, local workshop beyond the big dealership networks. “Sometimes farmers often don’t like using dealerships, they prefer using someone local they can build a relationship with. Since we started, we’ve grown steadily through word of mouth, building a reputation for good, honest work.” What sets Tractortech apart is the breadth of se vices it offers. Beyond general repairs and maintenance, the team specialises in diagnostics and fault-finding, transmission and engine rebuilds, hydraulic hose repairs, electrical work, and air conditioning servicing. Their mobile hydraulic hose trailer means breakdowns can often be fixed on-site without costly delays. From its early days, Tractortech has expanded to a team of eight skilled staff, operating five service vehicles that crisscross the Waikato region, tackling everything from routine servicing to urgent breakdowns. Nigel says the company is set to add another mechanic and a salesman soon, responding to increasing demand and a new opportunity. Recently, Tractortech has partnered with CTM Imports to become the Waikato dealer for Mascar, Elho, Mandam, Frontoni and Sitrex. Nigel is proud that this alliance came about because CTM wanted a local workshop with no brand biases, and a partner that would stand behind its work and back the products fully. “There’s a lot that goes into dealing machinery, so we had to be confident we could support it properly,” Nigel explains. “We have the expertise and facilities to do it right here.” In fact, Tractortech is preparing for growth with plans to build a larger workshop and parts area across the yard from their current base. The existing workshop, purpose-built in 2020, is already bursting at the seams with big tractors and equipment. As Waikato’s dairy industry grows, so too does the need for fast, reliable machinery servicing. “Our farmers need us to be there when they need us. A quick response can make all the difference A vital partner to the region’s farmers when machinery breaks down during crucial times,” Nigel says. Like many in rural trades, recruiting skilled staff remains a challenge. Tractortech currently has three apprentices in training, a vital investment in the future. “They take patience and time to bring on, but they’re loyal and worth it,” Nigel notes. “We want to build a team that can serve this industry for years to come.” The company’s mix of competitive pricing, quality workmanship, and strong customer relationships has seen Tractortech firmly establish itself as Waikato’s go- to tractor technicians. “We support all brands, but John Deere remains a big part of what we do,” Nigel says. “Prices have gone up for parts, especially for the Deeres, so we work hard to find the right balance for farmers and deliver good quality at a fair price.” With after-hours callouts, loan tractors, and a retail department supplying lubricants, batteries and linkage parts, Tractortech continues to meet the practical, day-to-day needs of dairy farmers across the region.
