But Hoof Trim, which started around 18 months ago, is seeing farmers change their attitude when they witness the huge benefits of the company’s hoof trimming service, says owner Hardy Froneman. “Hoof trimming can farmers maintain healthier herds and maximise milk production. Comfortable cows are happy cows and happy cows produce more milk,” he says. In reaction to increasing demand Hoof Trim has been steadily expanding its operations from its Napier base to serve farms throughout Hawke’s Bay, Rotorua, Bay of Plenty, and as far south as Masterton, with further expansion planned based on demand. South African-born Hardy moved to New Zealand in 2014, completed his hoof trimming course, and initially worked for veterinary practices before establishing his own business. He says the company’s approach differs significantly from traditional veterinary treatments. “We trim and balance the foot as well, changing the shape and angles of the walking surface,” explains Hardy. “It makes it more comfortable for the cow - imagine walking in your shoes with one side worn down more than the other.” He says this addresses the root causes of lameness rather than simply treating symptoms. The Dutch 5-step method employed by Hoof Trim involves carefully trimming both claws to proper length, creating balanced weight distribution, modelling the sole to relieve pressure points, therapeutically addressing painful areas and removing loose horn to prevent infection. The company recommends trimming cattle hooves annually, particularly for dairy cows in confinement, though frequency can vary based on factors including diet, environment, and genetics. Huge benefits of hoof trimming realised During a typical session, each cow receives individual assessment, with hooves cleaned, excess growth removed and any abnormalities addressed. This personalised approach ensures each animal receives appropriate care based on its specific needs. Hardy says the financial benefits for farmers are substantial: “Farmers who invest in preventative trimming are seeing good results. The proactive approach allows cows to spend more time feeding in paddocks and reduces the likelihood of developing serious lameness issues,” explains Hardy. “When a cow goes lame a farmer can lose up to 45% of milk production. By getting hoofs trimmed early in the season it helps cows to maintain maximum production. Reproduction rates are also usually better as a healthy comfortable cow will cycle sooner and get back into the system sooner.” Hardy’s expertise stems from more than a decade of experience working with two of New Zealand’s largest independent veterinary companies as a large animal technician and hoof trimmer. The business operates with advanced equipment and follows strict professional standards. It provides routine hoof trimming services, comprehensive health assessments and treatment for various hoof diseases including foot rot, white line disease, and laminitis. Hardy is a founding member of the New Zealand Cattle Hoof Trimmers Association, established in 2023 to promote animal health and welfare by maintaining high standards in hoof care throughout the country. He says people can look at the association website (nzchta.co.nz) to find a trimmer in their region. “With more than 4.8 million cows in New Zealand and an industry that is growing faster year on year, they saw the need for a space where professional hoof trimmers can come together,” Hardy explains regarding the association’s formation. The timing for professional hoof trimming services appears ideal.
