But while it seems straightforward the engineering is out of this world. It’s bullet proof and the money and time it’s saved me is incredible,” says Far North farmer Pedro McHardy. Based at Hūkerenui Pedro is farming 168ha, milking 350 predominantly Friesian cows through a 32 aside herringbone. Changing council regulations meant he had to look at a new e luent system and he had been watching the Clean Green E luent Company for some time so approached owner Lindsay Lewis to discuss options. Lindsay suggested Pedro look at a working system on a farm and was impressed, Pedro decided to push the go button on the design of a system for his own farm. “The system the council had recommended was so complicated and not practical. I would have had to pipe under or over a creek or road and up a hill and let it come back down again. The Clean Green E luent Company system was so simple,” says Pedro. Pedro did the earthworks himself then The Clean Green E luent REMOVES %MORE SOLIDS & NUTRIENTS FROM EFFLUENT Company arrived at the farm and installed the system in a matter of days. The system begins with a unique, patented, concrete-lined weeping wall that removes 35% more solids and nutrients from e luent than any other tested weeping wall. The system is over 1,000 times cleaner than a solids press. The iltered liquid can be used for cleaning external yards, and the automated green washing system can reduce fresh water usage by 60% while virtually eliminating wash time. The NPK (Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium) stored in the solids, which are removed, reduces the NPK in the liquid e luent to a level that allows the fully automated, low-rate, low-depth application system to safely apply e luent to the land on a daily basis, with a maximum application depth of 0.75mm. This process eliminates the risk of nitrate leaching or ponding. As the solids dry in the weeping wall, the liquids separate and are distributed to the pasture. The entire system remains odour-free and aerobic, and since the liquid is still aerobic and the NPK levels are low, the liquid can be immediately utilised by the pasture. As nutrient loading is signi icantly reduced, the pods only need to be moved on a fortnightly basis. Pedro has been now using the system for three seasons and it has exceeded his expectations. “The e luent is much easier to deal with now. The yard wash on the backing gate recycles water and the weeping wall system means that the actual height of the solids portion of the e luent reduces as it dries as the water is coming out all the time. When you come to clean out the solids it’s just four to ive loads in a wagon for the whole season as the e luent left is dry and compacted and the liquid e luent is sprayed onto the paddocks and it gets taken up by the plants straight away. The system is too good to be true, it’s amazing.” Pedro appreciates that he can monitor it with just a glance each day. “There are two tanks with loats that indicate the tank levels. One tank should always be empty, and the other full. If I see one loat raised and the other lowered, I know the system is functioning perfectly every day. It’s that easy.” The after sales service has likewise been impressive: “When I can’t remember something I just ask Lindsay and he’s always been there to help. We’re sort of mates now.”
