Kelly Deeks Pure Oil NZ is turning locally grown oilseeds into high protein, energy dense feed ingredients designed to help New Zealand dairy farmers get more from every kilogram of feed. Based at Rolleston, the company cold presses New Zealand grown rapeseed and sunflower seed, producing protein meals and oils for dairy, beef, sheep, goats, poultry, pigs, equine, and petfood applications. Commodities manager Dean Smith says Pure Oil’s point of difference begins with its mechanical cold pressing process, which extracts oil without solvents or chemical extraction. “We’re a cold pressed plant, which is unique,” he says. “We mechanically crush the seed, squeeze the oil out, filter it and put it in the bottle. There’s no heat and no chemicals used, and the only coproduct produced is a high protein meal perfect for dairy.” The company began about 15 years, making feedstock seed oil for biofuel which never got off the ground, before Nick Murney and investors stepped in and shifted its focus towards crushing oilseed crops and supplying animal feed. Today, Pure Oil works with more than 80 growers, predominantly in Canterbury and Southland, and processes the crop at its Rolleston plant. While oil remains an important part of the operation, Dean says the resulting meal is where Pure Oil has developed a particularly strong niche in dairy nutrition. Rather than maximising oil extraction, the cold pressing process leaves about 10% oil in the company’s standard dairy meal, compared with about 2% to 3% in many conventional protein meals. That residual oil provides additional energy alongside protein. Pure Oil’s canola meal contains about 36% protein, with further controlled heat treatment designed to increase the proportion of rumen bypass proteins. “It’s all about efficiency and the quality of the protein in the meal,” Dean says. “Our processing of our meal after oil extraction is designed with one purpose in mind - to make it a better dairy feed. We heat our meal to just the minimum temperature needed, so that we create the bypass proteins without destroying the other nutritional goodness in the meal. The cow is going to absorb it better, so it’s more efficient and more effective.” That combination of protein and energy can be particularly valuable at key points in the dairy season, including when cows are being prepared for mating and need to maintain body condition. Producing high protein, energy dense feed Pure Oil also produces full fat meal, retaining significantly more oil and delivering a concentrated source of energy as well as protein. Dean says it can be useful where farmers want to lift energy intake without adding large quantities to the ration. The company’s oil products bring another nutritional angle, with rapeseed oil containing about 12% omega 3 and a favourable omega 3 to omega 6 balance. PureGold, its cold pressed rapeseed oil for animal nutrition, can be used in textured feeds or as supplementary energy for calves, poultry, equine, and other animals. New Zealand production is another key point of difference, by far the largest oilseed buyer in New Zealand and maintaining a GMO free supply. Dean says most protein meals imported into New Zealand are derived from genetically modified crops. Growth is now focused on increasing production capacity at Rolleston, where eight German presses operate around the clock. Four more presses are planned, lifting capacity by 50% and giving Pure Oil further scope to supply locally made animal nutrition products.
