Hayden McKenzie is their Rural Plumbing & Filtration Manager. He worked for them briefly at the start of his 20 year long career in the water and irrigation industry and returned to work for them 10 years ago, starting in the field and working his way up through the company. In the 10 years that he was away Southland Farm Services grew as dairy conversions accelerated throughout Southland. What had been a staff of seven when he left is now a tight-knit group of 60, many of whom have been there 10 years or more. “We do plumbing, pumping, filtration and effluent, and we’re the agency for DeLaVal Milking Systems throughout the Southland and Otago Regions,” says Hayden. Southland Farm Services operates through three internal divisions: the Milking and Engineering Division which focuses on dairy installations, servicing and aftermarket products; the Rural Plumbing, Pumps and Effluent Division (Southland Plumbing and Pumps) and the Machine Operations Division which combine with the Rural Plumbing team to handle broader infrastructure projects. Over the last 10 years Hayden has seen a growing awareness of water filtration in the region and Southland Farm Services delivers extensive water filtration, purification and treatment solutions: they supply and install heavy-duty filtration setups designed explicitly for dairy sheds, as well as advanced treatment systems designed to clear mineral accumulation and scaling from rural bores and farm water lines. Southland Farm Services takes care of everything from the initial testing to having a system ready to deliver clean water, Hayden explains. “We take a water test from a bore or a stream or whatever the source is, get it analysed then make a recommendation to clear that water up to the recommended New Zealand drinking standard. They can be 20 metres apart and one’s bad and one’s perfect.” As well as offering a one stop shop for their rural clients Southland Farm Services runs a 24-hour breakdown service with an electrician, a plumber and a milking machine technician on call seven days a week. “People don’t just milk between 7.30 and 5pm,” says Hayden. “And if a water pump breaks down at 10 o’clock at night the cows still need water.” While they still average around three call-outs a week that’s significantly fewer than it used to be. The technology that allows farmers to monitor their systems via their phones has contributed to an improvement in the way clients are servicing their systems which helps reduce the number of system failures. While Southland Farm Services has grown into a one stop shop capable of testing, advising, installing, maintaining and repairing their rural clients’ systems, they continue to enjoy the mutual trust and loyalty that comes with their long-running relationships and understanding of the industry they serve.
