We measure the grass through winter and spring weekly, so we know what we’re dealing with all the time; whether we’ve got a surplus or a deficit coming.” For the Burkes, buying their own farm has always been their end goal and they’ve been open to whatever opportunities arose to help them take the next step towards that goal. James would like to see more young people recognizing what the dairy industry has to offer as long as you’re prepared to stick at it. “I see so many young people coming through and after a couple of years they lose hope of ever getting that far, but there is hope,” he explains. “The dairy industry has a lot of steps there to help you progress if you want to do the hard work to get there. The Townshends helped us and there’s a lot of people out there who want to help young people. The key is to surround yourself with good people and if you end up in a bad position get out to the Dairy NZ field days and talk to others, find yourself a mentor. Seek support and guidance and absorb all the knowledge you can to facilitate your success in the dairy industry.” “The key is to surround yourself with good people and if you end up in a bad position get out to the Dairy NZ field days and talk to others, find yourself a mentor. Seek support and guidance and absorb all the knowledge you can to facilitate your success in the dairy industry.” James and staff member Joseph Barrett discuss the week’s feed wedge.
