The couple own four dairy farms: Tawa Ridge, Highview and Te Motu, in Kaharoa – between Lake Rotorua and Tauranga – and Okororie, in the Tirau area. In all, the farms are home to 2000 Friesian/Frie- sian-cross cows plus 1000 replacement stock, a breed mix Chris Haworth says suits their business. “We have an increased focus on improving our livestock income which can offset variability in the milk price return with the Hereford cross being of value both for calf sales and rearing for a beef operation ourselves,” he says. Each farm has a manager running the day to day operation and each has two farm staff assisting whether in a full time or part time capacity. Ad- ditional staff are seasonal where needed. “Staff are the life blood of our business and we seek to continually improve their work environment and keep them motivated,” Chris says. Along with the dairy units, the couple also run an additional 300ha young stock block at Kaharoa, and a contractor, Brendon Conwell looks after this operation. “The goal in our farming has always been to just keep on advancing and increase the size of the business. When you start out it is important to set goals guiding you to the next outcome and it is very satisfying to achieve them. We didn’t inherit a farm to begin however we did receive family money so to preserve this and build a farming business has been a priority with years of hard work and planning.” A strong emphasis has been placed on improving the quality of stock and genetic gain, something Chris says has reaped direct benefits in terms of Farming Sue Russell Farm manager Mark Jeynes with Chris Haworth and Chris Stevens beside the new effluent pond at the Okoroire farm.
