For us it is all about results,” he says. Paul started working on a family member’s dairy farm as soon as he left school then headed straight to Waikato Milking System’s Timaru dealership and says he quickly developed a passion for work- ing with dairy farmers to help them improve their operations. This saw him purchase the Ashburton Waikato Milking Systems dealership at the ripe old age of 18. That was in 2005 and since then he has grown the business considerably adding the Oamaru and North Canterbury dealerships along with a specialist Rotary Platform Division, which upgrades and maintains rotary platforms. This has added up to a comprehensive offering for clients providing them with everything dairy, including new milking machine installs, repairs and maintenance and a full range of day-to-day milking machine products. Paul says that many dairy sheds in the region are now 10-20 years old meaning that there is a lot of potential for farmers to increase efficiency and prof- itability in their operations with the right equipment and technology. And the results for investment can be significant. He points to a recent project, which saw Morrison Agri upgrade a shed for a client. “The owner didn’t live on the farm and had never been a dairy farmer. We came in with a fresh set of eyes and found that the shed was undersized for the operation’s needs and staff were spending a lot of time in the shed. The solution we recommended was to get rid of the old cup removers, claws and dropper set up and and implement a custom design. This shaved 1.5 hours off milking each day for the one staff member that was then needed in the shed. So a two person shed was reduced to one person freeing up a whole labour unit.” The investment only cost the farmer around $120,000 and by freeing up a staff member this means that other jobs on farm can be attended to further improving the operation, productivity and overall profitability. Cow health and milk volumes in the shed have also increased. Paul estimates the farmer will pay back the technology in only a year. He says people often think they have the right equipment but recent technological advances mean this is often no longer the case. This is where the expertise of the team at Morrison Agri comes in, recommending the best solution from the available technology.
