Established as a general carrier in Timaru in 1972, the business has grown to now employ a staff of 460 across 17 locations nationwide with services including general, bulk, dairy, chilled, container transportation, and warehousing. In 2016 Ngai Tahu purchased a 50% share in Hilton Haulage and became known as Hilton Haulage Limited Partnership. The joint venture of the shareholder members of Hilton Haulage, Waka Capital along with Ngai Tahu, cemented its commitment as a locally-owned business focused on the long-term generational well-being of the company and its contribution to Aotearoa. General manager sales and business development, Paul Rait, says the company’s success continues to be built on the core values of people, safety, customer focus and future vision. Underpinning this is the aim to attract and retain the very best staff, while ensuring its tools, resources and systems constantly adapt and develop to meet the ever-evolving needs of its clients. “Aside from our head office location in Timaru, all our other locations are centred around our customer base and working with them, so five years ago we expanded into the North Island in a variety of locations primarily centred around the dairy industry.” This strategic expansion involved the acquisition of bulk liquid transport for dairy through the purchase of another company. One of Hilton Haulage’s many valued client partnerships is with stock food manufacturer Seales Winslow. Hilton Haulage have the depth and breadth to ensure an end-to-end supply chain for Seales Winslow and operates as a joint venture/sub-contractor to it, undertaking line haul and on-farm delivery of calf feed throughout Southland. This relationship is an example of Hilton Haulage’s business ethos of developing strong and meaningful long-term relationships with its clients. It is also a perfect example of the company not just being about what it does, but what it aims to be to its clients and staff, Paul says. Running a modern, reliable and efficient fleet is also a part of its vision and strategy. Its fleet has high efficiency Euro 5 and Euro 6 engines, while the ability to run HPMV (high productivity motor vehicles) allows loads up to 60 tonnes gross, reducing the number of trips for the total annual tonnage hauled by its fleet.
