Dairy Production Systems Ltd (DPSL) are leaders in the management and nutrition of dairy cows for optimum productivity, providing farm consultancy services and training to the dairy industry and working alongside dairy farmers to increase herd productivity. The DPSL team states, “Regardless of farm system, sire, location and breed, the basic unit of productivity is the cow, and her feed conversion e iciency. We do not care what system you operate - that is very much an individual farmer choice – but we do care that you do it well, while optimising the welfare of animals, people and environment.” Combining veterinary, nutrition, cow and practical farm management skills, the Waikato-based consultancy team works throughout New Zealand and o ers a rare combination of expertise in animal health, nutrition, cow management, problem solving and analysis of dairy farm systems. Dairy Production Systems’ clients operate through the whole range, from genuineSystem 1 - grass only, no purchased feed or grazing o - right through to System 5 plus, including certi ied organic farms, and those once-a-day milking all season. “In all cases sustainable success depends on understanding the cows, how they function and what they want. It is not a luke that the average six week in-calf rate (ICR) across Dairy Production Systems’ client base does reach target with minimal intervention – andmany exceed 75%. There is a strong correlation between six-week ICR, comparative stocking rate and pro itability.” Correct management of dairy cow nutrition is critical to the success of every dairy farm.Optimising feed conversion e iciency - where the feed went, and how well it went -is dependent on how well cows are managed and fed. “This always includes pasture - grazed grass is still the single biggest individual feed across all farm systems. Optimising feed e iciency means less wastage of all nutrients.” Dairy Production Systems’ tenet: “Well fed, well managed, happy productive cows make happy pro itable farmers.” The team can work with you to increase your knowledge and skills in the management and nutrition of dairy cattle and show you how to maximise your dairy farm’s pro itability without compromising the welfare of people, cows or the environment. The Waikato Dairy Farming Benchmarking can assist farmers in planning forward to ensure their business maintains viability, if for example, interest rates increase, or incur large unplanned expenses. The benchmarking tools also allow farmers to run a comparison and identify where improvements can be made. For example if farmers in the area are spending $98.65 on animal health a year, but their own costs are $164.00 per year, there is room for improvement. If you want to buy your first farm, it can help identify what average returns and costs are on farms in the area to determine what you can afford. If your cash flow is struggling, what has changed in your financial performance to previous years, and is this the same trend as other farmers? We also find that an analysis of a large number of client’s financial results allows us to identify trends in the industry. Looking at the results for the 2022 season, it was an amazing season. It looks and feels like one of the most profitable seasons on record. A great result considering it was a drought for a good part of the summer. The Farm Owner/Operator category showed Net Income up by $1.29 kg/MS, a 58% increase on the 2021 season which was a very positive season.
