There are also considerable ef ciencies in using trucks for carting crop and feed as they can do the same job as a tractor and have a lower capital outlay but can travel at twice the speed on roads. “That’s been our motto and it still is today; we hate using tractors and trailers for carting down the road. A tractor and trailer costs a lot of money to maintain compared to a truck.” BlueGrass has its own workshop with two fulltime mechanics, plus a subcontractor working on the trucks and another subcontractor servicing and maintaining its tractors. One of the company’s original Fendt tractors has run up 18,000 hours, and while Brook regards these as an excellent machine, they were top-of-the-line in terms of their purchase cost. Consequently, Case became the preferred option, especially because of the high standard of service and support provided by the dealership which supplies them. “It doesn’t matter how good anything is, if your service and support is not good, it’s a waste of time.” Running an ef cient operation also includes BlueGrass using Eroad in its trucks and having its tractors equipped with Tracmap and full GPS guidance with auto-steer. “We’ve got GPS so that when we are mowing, we are mowing at full width so that it makes the raking better. Your whole ef ciency just becomes better because you don’t have lots of overlap and it’s the same with Tracmap.” “It doesn’t matter how good anything is, if your service and support is not good, it’s a waste of time.”
