Originally established as MidWest Machinery, a general farm machinery and service shop based in Hawera, the business has evolved to specialise in ef uent management, servicing customers nationwide as well as in Australia and further abroad. Responding to the demand for on-farm ef uent management systems, the team at Midwest Machinery began researching and developing its own line of ef uent equipment, based on the needs of kiwi dairy farmers. As demand grew, and society began to focus increasingly on environmental sustainability, the company became more focused and eventually specialised just on ef uent equipment, rebranding as Nevada. While the slurry tanker became Nevada’s agship product, a diverse range of ef uent products all designed to meet the farmers speci c needs, were progressively added to the company’s portfolio. Part of specialising in ef uent equipment is becoming experts in ef uent system design, ef uent management best practices, council compliance and other regulations. • from page 80 Reporoa farmer Andrew Bell with a Nevada pond mixer (Photo: Ian Bell). Chris says having focussed on improving business systems is also paying off. “I have a great team working in the of ce and I think we’re now at a stage where we’re able to cope with increase in demand for our services. In that way we have future-proofed the business.” Chris still spends 50% of his time on the tools. First and foremost, he says, he’s a tradesman and using his skills as an experienced electrician, is what he gains the most satisfaction out of. “I think it is also really important for our clients to see me out with the team working. It builds the relationship we have because they see the boss at work on their project.” Beyond working behind the farm gate and on commercial situations, Chris and the team also undertake residential work. “We’re happy to supply our electrical services on just about anything within our area. “ The variety of work is good for the team and especially for those new to the sector, gaining valuable experience.” Improved business systems Since 2014, Nevada has been an accredited dairy farm ef uent designers, enabling a one-stopapproach to ef uent solutions for both new and existing ef uent systems. “We can help with anything from council compliance, through to planning and futureproo ng,” says Marketing Manager Natalie Henderson. “We can provide all the necessary ef uent equipment, and can help with project managing any installations. “We sell quite a range of ef uent equipment, including slurry tankers, pond stirrers, irrigators, drag hose systems and ef uent pumps. To ensure top quality and reliability, our equipment is designed and built in New Zealand with components fabricated by engineers in New Zealand and Europe. The range is constantly evolving to meet demand, such as ef uent bladder tanks, ood pumps, and at the moment we’re developing a new ground operated over-wall electric pond stirrer.” Acknowledging the uniqueness of every farm’s layout and operation, Natalie says the combination of equipment needed to manage an ef uent system for a farmer is carefully tailored for their speci c needs. “Not every farmer will need travelling irrigators, and some farms will be more suited to slurry tankers that can spread fertiliser further a eld, or perhaps a drag hose system. The degree of expertise that farmers need also varies. Some will come to us and already know that they want a slurry tanker and what size they want, for example. Others will have an ef uent problem that they wish to resolve and seek our help in designing a system. That’s where our ef uent management specialists will consult with the farmer, identify their needs and often provide a farm visit so that a solution can be designed.” Re ecting on a local Kiwi business that has grown and evolved with the times and to meet its customers’ needs, Natalie says the research, development, manufacturing and sourcing of quality ef uent equipment, along with providing specialist advice to ensure customers get real value from their investments, has been at the heart of the company’s success. “You’re really making sure that the investment being made is being spent well, and will meet the farmer’s needs.” Ashburton farmer Bruce Turpie (centre) in front of a 37,000 litre tanker.
