And when working on replacement milking sheds and yards, other challenges have to be worked through before a project can get underway. Building around normal daily activity on a dairy farm must be factored in so that cows, milk tankers and farm staff can easily access the existing plant while the new project is underway. “There’s a lot of planning that goes into how we schedule the project. Often we need to build new races and tracks for animals and machinery to use while we’re doing the build. The more complex stuff is what spins my wheels these days.” And helping in signi cant ways to make the business what it is today is Nigel’s wife Ruth, who maintains a strategic overview of how the company is running. “Having Ruth there with her business capability and running the numbers is really important. It’s been very much a team effort.” With a frenzied building sector generally, Nigel says one of the pinch points is in the time it now takes to work through consultancy and consenting pathways on complex projects. Engineering and drafting can take upward of 8 weeks and the building consent about 6-9 weeks, however he says that this time isn’t wasted. “It means we can get all our ducks in a row so when the boxes get ticked we’re ready and resourced to get on with the job. This is especially important with our farm work which is very timespeci c.” Now settled in Queenstown, Nigel says he’s pleased with where the business is now and how it has navigated the vagaries of the construction sector. “You have to be well-prepared and exible and you have to have a long-term strategy that can adapt to changing market conditions.” farm dairy?
