Paul says there are a lot of Cobra irrigators around the local area since the product was launched in 2012. As one of those involved in the initial research and development stage, Paul knows the irrigators inside and out. He services many at the Waikato Dairy Ef uent Services yard in Morrinsville, and is regularly called upon by dealers and end users throughout New Zealand. “I can usually answer 99% of their questions,” he says. His 17 years with Hi-Tech Enviro Solutions, now Waikato Milking Systems, stood Paul in good stead for the opening of his own specialist service rm. “We do a fair bit of business with Waikato Milking Systems, they supply a lot of our gear and they still ring me just about every day to talk about issues I can help with.” Paul was concerned about the nancial management of his new business, so brought on the local chartered accountancy rm MBS Advisors. “Going from being a paid worker to owning your own business can be pretty daunting, and it was the one thing I was really worried about. Having MBS Advisors and Xero has made that side really easy. The only bad thing is seeing how much tax I pay!” After three years in business, Waikato Dairy Ef- uent Services is growing steadily and has a good amount of forward work to the point where Paul and his wife Brenda will soon be looking to hire staff. Paul says a school leaver is a possibility, since he was a school leaver when he rst entered the industry. “I come from a farming background and got into water pumps when I left school. From there I went farming for several years, and decided to go back to pumps 20 years ago.” Paul can see the some movement in the pump and irrigation market on the horizon, as rising fuel prices could mean the phasing out of tractor driven or diesel driven pumps in the coming years, in favour of more economical and sustainable electric pumps. He can also see a time in the near future where the spread of ef uent is going to become a consented activity, like it already is in the South Island and the Bay of Plenty, rather than a permitted activity like it currently is in the Waikato. “We can see in time, from the council’s side it’s Paul and Brenda Smith set up Waikato Dairy Ef uent Services in 2019. The company installs services, and repairs ef uent and irrigation equipment throughout Morrinsville and the Waikato. going to come down to a lot more proof of placement and ow rates. When we install pumps, we can also install variable speed drives (VSDs) and ow meters that talk to each other and talk to the irrigator, regardless of where it is on the farm.” “We can see in time, from the council’s side it’s going to come down to a lot more proof of placement and ow rates.
