36 | nzdairy Expanding the beef side of the business Richard Loader North Otago farmers Rogan and Michelle Borrie have purchased a new farm, which will become a dedicated-beef operation at Clydevale, near Balclutha. Rogan was on holiday when he saw the farm listed on Property Brokers and went to check it out as soon as he returned. The most recent addition in Clydevale (near Balclutha) is 321ha - the possession of which took place in October. “We will have Friesian bulls and we’ve got Hereford and Angus we put over our heifers and we are going to AI the bottom 20% of our herd to Charolais,” Rogan explains. “Eventually I would like to get 800 odd of each age group on there. This new place will free up space on other farms, so we can just focus on dairy on those and increase milk production on the other farms as well. Next season we will be calving 3,000 cows in total. I’ve got a manager and a worker lined up for Clydevale, so Sam Sharp who already lives locally and has a lot of experience on sheep and beef farms, is going to be the manager and he will be starting on November 1, a month after we take over.” One of the previous farm-owners staff Tony is also going to stay-on, to assist in setting up Rogan’s new operation there. “Some of the biggest jobs will be putting laneways in; re-fencing and sorting out the water scheme and adding onto the existing irrigation, so we plan to expand on that. It’s on a private scheme just out of the Clutha River.” He anticipates it may take 12 to 18 months to get the new operation up and running. Rainfall at the new farm averages about 800mm per year, which is a fair bit wetter than the Waitaki Valley, which DAIRY & BEEF » Rogan and Michelle Borrie Merinos all clipped.
