Old-school unlined effluent ponds were hit and miss, with farmers often not allowing enough storage for the amount of effluent produced. “Now we build decent concrete systems and can calculate how many weeks or months of storage farmers actually need.” Accountability also runs strong through the company’s client-focused ethos. Every project is backed by a lifetime guarantee against human error. “If we make a mistake that impacts a project over its life, we will fix it.” The commercial building sector is also making a come-back, with Blair and his team having recently completed a substantial New Plymouth project and lining themselves up to start work on a new one in their home town. “Commercial building is recovering the quickest out of everything. We’re pricing quite a bit of work. But everyone is competing for a smaller slice of the same pie.”For Gibson Construction, that means employing more of the business savvy and opportunistic smarts that saw them hit the Deloitte Fast Fifty index in 30th place just a year after Brent and Blair bought the company. A network of local building contractors and sub-contractors across the country ensures the team is well positioned to respond quickly to market upswings.
