NZ Dairy Summer 2024

| 71 nzdairy Embracing the pressure and challenges Richard Loader Dairy farmer Marlon Gabriel is setting his sights on achieving a 50:50 sharemilking position within five years, demonstrating the pathway available to determined individuals in the sector. “The pressure and challenges are all part of the journey. Embrace these challenges, for they will mould you into a strong and resilient individual,” says Marlon who currently manages 600 cows as a contract milker at Westfield Limited in Southland. Since arriving in New Zealand in 2004, Gabriel has methodically climbed the dairy farming ladder. Starting as a dairy farm assistant in Rakaia he embarked on a path that would see him progress through various roles within the industry from second in charge to assistant manager and eventually to dairy farm manager. But Marlon’s journey wasn’t without its trials. In 2009 when he was working as assistant manager the contract milker suddenly decided to end his contract at the end of the season. Fortunately the farm’s owner graciously absorbed Marlon and his colleagues, allowing them to continue their journey in the industry. By 2011 Marlon and his family moved to Gore so Marlon could take on a manager position. “It was here that I had the opportunity to develop my expertise. Although it came with its share of challenges, the knowledge and skills I gained during this time have proven to be invaluable,” he says. Prior to his current position, Marlon managed two farms concurrently at an organic operation in Aquila in 2018, building valuable experience in different farming systems. This diverse experience has helped shape his approach to farm management. His current role at Westfield Limited, owned by Grant and Janene Dickson, sees him managing a 206-hectare property, with 200 hectares of effective farming area. The farm has a 42-aside herringbone milking shed equipped with automatic cup removers and teat spray systems. Under his management, the farm achieved 450,000 kilogrammes of milk solids last season, aided by favourable weather conditions, re-grassing to improve pasture quality and strategic supplementary feeding in the shed. This marked a significant increase of 50,000 kilogrammes from the previous season. Marlon says the farm is on track to achieve similar production this season. The farm’s success is very much a family affair. Gabriel’s wife Eva works as relief milker and calf rearer, while their children - Princess (20), Angelina (17), and Mark Evan (12) - assist during weekends. Dairy farmer Marlon Gabriel. The farm also employs two full-time staff members. Marlon has been such a keen advocate for the dairying lifestyle that in 2008 he sponsored his brother Carlo’s move to New Zealand, expanding the family’s presence in the dairy sector. DAIRY SERVICES » Westfield Farms Gabriel and Dicks By 2013, he had achieved another significant milestone, purchasing a house in Invercargill further cementing the fact that he now calls New Zealand home. Marlon’s advice to others pursuing similar goals reflects the wisdom gained from his experience in the sector. “The pressure and challenges are all part of the journey, guiding you towards your dream of Complete Silage, Baling, Cultivation, Effluent, Spraying & Excavator Contracting Service Phone: 03 225 8488 Rabco Ag Ltd E-mail: admin@rabco.nz Web: www.rabbitt.co.nz becoming a successful contract milker.” He says his progression from farm assistant to contract milker, and next to sharemilker, showcases the career pathway available within New Zealand’s dairy industry and hopes his story serves as an inspiration to newcomers, demonstrating how determination, family support, and a willingness to learn can lead to success.
