Among those keeping up to date with some of the smartest tools of the trade is One Arrow Ltd farm operator Jonny Brown, who oversees the 340 hectare Dairy Holdings farm, which was converted about 20 years ago. One Arrow, home to 1285 cows this season, reflects the balance between practical daily routines and carefully selected technology to keep operations ticking over without over-complicating them. At Bankside, between Rakaia and Dunsandel, the farm stands as a testament to how routine and technology combine in modern dairying. Jonny oversees the day-to-day running of the property, adopting both hands-on management and a range of tools to help the farm operate smoothly. During peak milking, the day begins at 3.30am when the first staff member brings in the herd, while another starts at 5am, and two more join at 7am. With two milkings each day, it takes about three and a half hours to move the herd through the 54-bale rotary shed. Between milkings, the team turns to irrigation, calf feeding, and shifting breaks before the cycle repeats.
