Growing use of electronic cup removers • from page 118 Working within the shed’s existing foundation and drainage often means new council permits are not required, saving plenty of time and money. “So many farms have lots of existing infrastruc- ture, and while building new is really nice and certainly a lot easier for us to have a green site, it also means existing infrastructure is then being scrapped. “So often there is enough that can be saved and refurbished, saving farmers a bit of money and avoiding perfectly usable infrastructure being thrown away into the landfill. We are probably using existing infrastructure to some degree on 70% to 80% of our jobs.” One of the biggest changes being seen in MWS’ area of the Eastern Bay of Plenty is the installa- tion of electronic cup removers, and the significant advancements they have achieved in reliability and functionality in the past few years. “We are now seeing refinements in milk flow sensing technol- ogy,” Innes says. “The latest electronic cup removers from Wai- kato Milking Systems have an extra timer to make sure cows are milking for a set period of time.” MWS designs farm water supply systems in-house, using a range of pump manufacturers’ equipment.
