NZ Dairy Winter 2021

Seeking better environmental outcomes in farming is one of Belinda’s key goals and she has held roles with both Environment Lead- ers Taranaki and DairyNZ’s Step Change Pilot Programme. “For me, this is a huge focus and a huge pas- sion. We can’t bury our heads in the sand over this stuff. Our farm is one of the pilot farms for Step Change and we’re working with DairyNZ to look at how we can change our environmental impact. “We’ve already done a lot of planting on the farm. We don’t have any rivers on it, so we’re planting for shelter and shade. It’s a work in progress. A lot of the trees we planted in our first year here didn’t survive so we’re trying again this year. We’ll keep going to see what works best.” As the 2021 Fonterra Dairy Woman of the Year, Belinda has received a scholarship – worth up to $20,000 – that she can use for a development programme, professional and business coaching, a learning experience or some combination of all three. “It’s pretty mindblowing! We’ve been focussed on moving so I haven’t decided how I’ll use the scholarship yet. I’ve started working on it though and am thinking I may use it for a project around mental health or mental well-being.” Belinda is a strong advocate for building con- nections and networks in the dairy industry and enjoys providing guidance to others on their re- spective dairy journeys. “I like helping people find solutions and watching their progression through the system. It’s so rewarding to meet people I’ve mentored and hearing out what they’ve been up to – it’s really awesome.” Meanwhile, Ben, Belinda and their two sons, Hayden, 15 and Tobi, 12, are looking forward to the coming season and spending more time together on their Opunake farm.
