The couple won the 2022 Central Plateau Share Farmer of the Year title, as well as winning all the category’s merit awards. Richard Loader Having only recently moved to a farm in the Central Plateau region, Todd and Renee Halliday entered this year’s NZ Dairy Industry Awards as a way to build their local dairy contacts and benchmark their performance. As it turns out, their entry put them at the top of the class. In March, the couple won the 2022 Central Plateau Share Farmer of the Year title, as well as winning all the category’s merit awards. Adding to their success, the couple were recently named runners-up in the 2022 New Zealand Share Farmer of the Year national competition at a gala dinner in Christchurch. They also won the Ecolab Farm Dairy Hygiene Award and the Meridian Environmental Sustainability Award. Share Farmer head judge Guy Michaels described them as “a complete package”, with a farm that was picture perfect. “We’re excited to see where they take themselves and their business.” Todd and Renee are thrilled with their latest success. “We were blown away with our result on the night, but it feels so good to be recognised for all the hard work we’ve put into dairy farming as well as the work that we put into our presentation for the NZDIA.” Joining DairyBase in the lead up to the awards meant that Todd and Renee had a good understanding of their farm system and its nancial and physical performance. “The analysis we were able to do on our business was a huge take from that and, with support from our accountant and bank manager, it meant we had a really clear understanding of our actual position.” The couple, along with their four children (Henry, 12, Charlotte, 10, Olive, 7 and Florence, 3), have just completed their second season at Reporoa, where they are contract milkers and equity partners with Renee’s parents Phil and Diane Herdman on a 153ha farm, milking 520 cows. Having elected to purchase the farm’s jersey herd, supplemented with cows from an ex-jersey stud farm, Todd and Renee are now complete jersey converts. “We love their nature and their personalities and they’re such ef cient converters of feed,” says Todd. For Todd, who grew up in Auckland, dairy farming is his third career. He started out studying advertising and marketing.
