Since then he’s gone from strength to strength and is currently variable order sharemilking 1060 cows on 270 fully irrigated hectares in Hinds just out of Ashburton. An integral part of Will’s journey as a committed dairy farmer has been his entries into the New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards. Having won Farm Manager of the Year for the Canterbury and North Otago Region in 2018, and been runner-up nationally, he went on to win Share Farmer of the Year this year for his region and has just found out that he’s now the National New Zealand Dairy Industries Share Farmer of the Year for 2022. In between the two awards Will has moved to South Island dairy corporate, Dairy Holdings, and onto their farm Propad Investments, otherwise known as Propad. On June 1st 2020 he became a variable order share-milker there, purchasing 40% of the herd in exchange for 34% of the milk cheque. Part of the deal with Propad was the implementation of rigorous Health & Safety procedures which obviously stood him in good stead with this year’s judging given the winning outcome. “We’ve really embraced it and our team on farm have really got behind it and it’s part of the culture here and at the forefront of people’s minds. It was one of the judges comments that it’s not just policy it’s about family and making sure everybody gets home safely at the end of the day,” says Will, “so it’s become a strength not a weakness.” 2022 New Zealand Share Farmer of the Year Will Green.
