Bill is best known for his lasting legacy to the region in the form of the city’s Bill Richardson Transport World. Mere enjoys the diversity in the role and looking after the rosters for the company’s team of drivers who supply refuge and recycling collection services in Invercargill and surrounds. Renting out skips of various sizes forms another part of her work and Mere says on any given day she will be ielding questions from customers. “I have a leet of nine waste and recycling trucks and nine drivers. With the waste division drivers holding Class 2 to Class 4 licenses we encourage them in time to attain their Class 5 license as a stepping stone in their careers. We o er our own driver training programme.” The waste division has been operating over 40 years and, Mere says, started o very small. “It was just open top skips and then expanded from there. We grew also because we bought a few other waste businesses.” One thing Mere has noticed as a positive is that many businesses operating in Invercargill have a much more ‘green’ approach to waste management. “There is de initely much more awareness to reduce, re-use, recycle frommany of our clients and that’s a good thing. I hate to think of good product going into the land ill, on land that would be much better being used to build more houses.” Southern Transport Co Ltd works in with Oji Fibre Solutions, a leading producer of market pulp, paper and ibre based packaging. “We separate cardboard, paper and ilm and take it to Recycle South and the Oji Fibre Solutions plant to be repurposed.” Delivering skip bins to houses, particularly where house-lots of products are being put in the bin is another growing activity. “The family may not have the necessary time to be able to sell on household furniture, appliances. We work alongside the local Hospice and this was our irst move to using skips for recycling purposes.” Toys, Mere says, are the most popular items retrieved and recycled. She has been in the waste management business long enough now to see the direct bene its that come from a little fore-thought and consciousness around reducing land ill waste to an absolute minimum.
