The services of a business advisor have been employed, which company owner Warick Buchanan says has provided an outside perspective and fresh ideas. This has resulted in changes to the business structure and Paeroa Farm Services now has people managing crucial aspects of the business creating the roles of Field Manager, Office Manager and Sales Manager. Warick says this has not only freed up his time but also given new and existing staff opportunities to advance their careers. “It means that decisions aren’t just reliant on me any more and things can happen faster. The results is customers can be looked after quicker and more efficiently,” he says. With the foundations of the business supported better Warick says this is allowing him to explore some exciting new developments set to take place in coming years. Although he can’t yet reveal what these will be he says it will definitely mean a better service as well as more variety of services for customers. He says his team of eleven and suppliers are key factors in the company’s growth. On-going training with both is important and Warick is a keen advocate of the New Zealand Certificate in Dairy Systems (Engineering) qualification, which the New Zealand Milking and Pumping Trade Association oversee. Recently two staff members Ahren Lomas and Sean Brinkmann completed their apprenticeships with another staff member currently completing his. “It’s great the industry has developed this apprenticeship. It’s a good form of learning for my staff providing a lot of opportunity and varied skills.”Warick is a big advocate of bringing new people into the industry and has just taken on two young staff members – one full time and one casual hoping to turn full time. “I’ve always employed more on attitude than skills. Skills are always a huge advantage but its more important to have people who work well in the team and show a positive attitude to customers. I think it’s important to have young people coming in to grow the industry as I believe it will be a strong industry in the future and will need more people so it’s vital we start training young people to be skilled, knowledgeable and full of enthusiasm.” Paeroa Farm Services is a family business, formerly owned by Warick’s parents. It has been serving the farming community for over thirty-five years from the Coromandel Peninsula to Northern Tauranga and across the Hauraki Plains. The diverse business supplies milking machines, water equipment (pumps, troughs, tanks, filtration, pipelines etc.) mainly for the dairy industry and pumping and piping work for swimming pools.
