96 | nzdairy Promoting the interests of its members Simply referred to as MPTA, the New Zealand Milking and Pumping Trade Assn. Inc was established in 1932 with the purpose of bringing higher standards for equipment and workmanship to dairy farmers in respect to milk harvesting, pumping, water and effluent application. The primary activities of the MPTA are to develop and implement standards for the design and performance of the milk harvesting, pumping and water application industries; foster training and competence development of members; encourage ethical and professional trading practises of members; and promote the business interests of members involved in the sales and service of milk harvesting and water applications systems. MPTA has over 180 member companies, collectively employing over 1,000 multi-skilled technicians and support staff who work on farm to design, install and service the milking machine equipment and/or the farm water reticulation or effluent systems. Over the years, those member companies build valued and trusted relationships with the farmers they visit year-on-year, and in many cases are multi-generational relationships. The milking machine tester is seen as a key part of the dairy operation. Maria Scott, MPTA Executive Officer, says all milking machine testers are required to undergo the extensive MPTA training and MPTA holds the register of Registered Milking Machine Testers. She says farmers should check the MPTA website www.nzmpta.co.nz for registered testers in their area and book in for their annual milking machine test.
