Based in Pukerau near Gore and owned by Geoff and Beth Henderson, the business supplies either raw or pasteurised milk direct to residential customers, or pasteurised milk to retail outlets and selected cafes. Due to growing demand,Henderson Dairy pasteurised milk is available from an increasing number of retailers. Henderson Dairy Farm Fresh Milk has two refrigerated vehicles delivering to homes and retailers in Eastern and Northern Southland, Tapanui and Invercargill, plus to Cafe Ambience in Gore and Crossroads Café in South Otago. “The demand for our milk is increasing, our name is certainly getting pretty well known now, but we are focused on supplying locally,” Beth says. Henderson Dairy is the only Southland A2 raw milk supplier that sells milk in reusable glass bottles and one of the few registered raw milk suppliers in the South Island. “To be able to sell raw milk, it is a legal requirement that nothing is added in and nothing is removed.” Regular milk contains both A1 and A2 beta-casein, but A2 milk contains only A2 betacasein. Research has found that A2 milk prevents some symptoms of dairy intolerance and eases others, despite containing the same amount of lactose as regular milk. “Some people with eczema have found raw milk can help alleviate eczema. There’s a lot that believe they might be lactose intolerant whereas raw milk, they have no problems drinking it.” Henderson Dairy milks a total of 250 cows on 110 hectares. The main herd comprising 220 cows supplies Fonterra, while the bottling herd of 25 to 30 cows that includes Jerseys produces the A2 milk from a C10 TB free herd with a low somatic cell count. With the exception of some crushed barley during winter, the bottling herd is fed only grass and hay year round and they do not go onto winter crop such as brassicas, neither are they fed baleage or silage because it taints the flavour of the milkdue to this type of feed being fermented, Beth says. The rules around selling raw milk, which is sold under the Ministry of Primary Industries regulated control scheme (RCS), are rigorous, Beth says. DAIRY PEOPLE » Henderson Dairy Fresh Milk “The RCS rules require us to have a registered verifier. We have to send raw milk records and milk test results to her every month. She also has to come to do a bi-annual verification of the shed and records. “The time taken for deliveries of raw versus pasteurised limits the number of people we can deliver milk to in a day.” However, when it is produced safely in accordance with accepted sanitary standards, raw milk is not at all the villain that the government continually claims it is, Beth says. “In fact, raw milk is among the safest foods a person can eat, ranking higher than other common foods like processed lunch meat, factory-produced chicken eggs, and even conventional vegetables. “It may come as a shock, but the latest research shows that leafy green vegetables actually carry with them a higher food safety risk than raw milk.” Henderson Dairy is the only Southland A2 raw milk supplier that sells milk in reusable glass bottles and one of the few registered raw milk suppliers in the South Island.
