Family legacy lives on at Westland Dairy Sheds Karen Phelps West Coast dairy shed business Westland Dairy Sheds Ltd, built on nearly two decades of dedicated service, is entering a new chapter as the next generation takes the helm, ensuring the family legacy continues to support local farmers. Originally established by Steve and Christine Mahuika, is now being taken over by their daughter Cherie and her husband Neil Linklater, following Steve’s passing three years ago and enabling Christine a much deserved retirement. The pair say the transition represents more than just a change of ownership - it’s the continuation of a family commitment to West Coast dairy farming. “It’s business as usual, carrying on the legacy Mum and Dad started,” says Cherie. Christine will continue to work alongside Neil and Cherie to ensure a smooth handover of the Hokitika-based operation. The timing couldn’t be better for the family business, with farmers beginning to invest more heavily in their operations. “Farmers are starting to invest more with the rise in the dairy payout and looking at extras such as automatic cup removers, updating plant and making their sheds more efficient,” explains Neil. Neil brings extensive experience to his management role, having been raised on a dairy farm and worked in the business on and off since its inception. He will oversee every facet of operations, maintaining hands-on involvement with clients in the field. Meanwhile, Cherie has been integral to the business from day one, working in the office alongside her mother Christine. The pair says that what sets Westland Dairy Sheds apart is its strong commitment to service and its family-owned approach. “We are passionate about providing good service, if the customer needs us we are there as quick as we can to get their plant back up and running,” says Cherie.
