Barn sawdust is composted and reused on paddocks in combination with effluent solids, reducing reliance on synthetic fertilisers. A consented 18,000m³ pond helps manage surface water, bringing wider benefits to the local catchment. Moisture probes around pivots guide irrigation decisions, and stock are excluded from all waterways and wetlands. The judges also noted Clydesdale Dairy’s thoughtful livestock management and commitment to animal welfare, including monitoring of the calving barn with cameras for rapid assistance, helping to maintain an exceptionally low calf mortality rate. Newborns receive colostrum, which is Brix tested and tube-fed, with ongoing blood testing to confirm antibody transfer. Francois said while environmental stewardship was always a goal, profitability was also important. “We wanted to tick the environmental box, but also wanted to be profitable,” he said. “It takes fine-tuning to get to where we are now.” Judges acknowledged the farm team’s ability to thrive in what it described as a supportive, productive environment, which contributes to the operation’s success. “With a passion for livestock breeding and a focus on high-output dairy production, this farm effectively balances economic goals with environmental stewardship.” That balance - between productivity, sustainability, and people - is what ultimately earned the Tillards their Ballance Farm Environment Award, and what continues to set their operation apart in the Otago farming landscape.
