Business has been keeping them busy Karen Phelps Since taking over Advance Dairy & Pump on 1 February, Nick and Tarn de Ridder have scarcely had a moment to catch their breath. The pair, who acquired Northland’s largest milking, water and dairy effluent system provider, say that business has been keeping them busy. “We have a good pipeline of work ahead of us,” says Nick who runs the day-to-day operations of the business. “The majority of our customers are dairy farmers and that sector is strong and has a positive outlook. Lots of development work is going on as farmers invest in their cow sheds, facilities and farms.” The de Ridders bring complementary skills to their new venture. Nick, who has lived in Northland for nearly 20 years, studied agriculture at Massey University and spent 15 years working for major agribusinesses including Ravensdown, Livestock Improvement and Tru-Test. Tarn, who hails from a dairy farm in Whangarei, continues to operate their other business, Tui Chiropractic, which she established in 2017. Summer saw Advance Dairy & Pump working on water reticulation, water pumps, solar water pump systems, trenching, waterlines and effluent pipe installation, as well as farm, house and residential pool water jobs. With winter approaching, it has shifted emphasis to milking plant maintenance and upgrades, automatic drafting gate installation and effluent system upgrades. The business, which employs 25 staff across branches in Whangarei, Dargaville and Wellsford, serves customers from the Auckland Harbour Bridge to Kawakawa. It is the authorised DeLaval agent for Northland, specialising in dairy plant upgrades, servicing and maintenance as its core business, with water systems forming a close second. “Our expertise sets us apart,” says Nick. “We have a lot of knowledge in our amazing team, who have spent many years in the industry and are very effective problem solvers. We’re locals, live in the rural community ourselves and come from farming backgrounds. We know our customers and want to create a very customer-centric business.” The company offers a comprehensive range of services including milking machinery sales and servicing, milking machine testing effluent systems, water pumps, solar pumps, water filtration, water reticulation, pipe and fittings, and a variety of consumables for dairy operations. The business only uses reputable brands including Delaval, Puretech, Grundfos, Doda, Reid and Harrison, Yardmaster, Davies, DAB to name but a few. One of the strengths of Advance Dairy & Pump is its 24/7 service availability, says Nick, ensuring that farmers experiencing urgent issues can receive rapid assistance. It also operates a mobile shop in some areas, providing a six-weekly delivery service for consumables and spare parts. The de Ridders are keen to maintain strong community connections through the business. The company sponsors local schools, volunteer fire brigades and fundraising events. “We want to give back to the communities we live and work in,” says Nick, who says that most of their staff live in rural communities.
