Ensuring dairy sheds are running efficiently Kelly Deeks With the cooler months upon us, Canterbury Water Services is urging farmers to make the most of the winter downtime to ensure their dairy sheds are running efficiently and compliantly, particularly when it comes to the service and certification of backflow preventers and chemigation valves. Founded in 2014 by James Barnett, Canterbury Water Services operates out of Woodend and Culverden and is well-known across North Canterbury for delivering reliable, fit-for-purpose water solutions. With five fully stocked service trucks on the road, the company is geared up to handle everything from new pump installs to complete dairy shed servicing and water testing systems, without delays. “We know time is tight on farms and no one wants to wait around for parts,” James says. “Our trucks carry everything we need to get every job done on site.” July is the perfect time for dairy farmers to check over their water infrastructure and get ahead of maintenance for the busy season ahead, and one of the most important services Canterbury Water Services offers is the certification and testing of backflow preventers and chemigation valves. These valves are critical to protecting the integrity of on-farm water supplies, ensuring chemicals or effluent don’t backflow into clean water systems, especially in dairy sheds where water is shared between multiple uses. “Backflow preventers are legally required and absolutely essential for keeping your potable water safe,” James says. “Chemigation valves are also required for irrigation systems, and both need to be tested annually.” Canterbury Water Services installs and certifies Reduced Pressure Zone (RPZ) devices and double check valves, both designed to stop contaminated water from flowing back into clean supply lines. Their team also services spring-loaded check valves, low-pressure drain valves, air/vacuum relief valves, and test ports to ensure chemigation valves meet industry standards. “These are not tick-box exercises,” James says. “It’s about protecting water supplies, livestock health, and public safety. We do full functionality tests and maintenance on these systems to keep them working exactly as they should.” Canterbury Water Services also provides expert new pump installations and dairy shed water system upgrades using tried-and-tested products from Southern Cross and Pentair. “We stick with brands that last,” James says. “They’ve got parts on the shelf and a good track record in the harshest farm environments.” James says July is a great time for farmers to get ahead on these essential water services. “It’s a quieter time on-farm and perfect for servicing your shed, testing your valves, and making sure your pumps are all go for spring.” With more than 25 years in the farming and water industries, and a strong understanding of Canterbury’s terrain and conditions, James has designed Canterbury Water Services to meet the specific needs of local farmers. From high-country installations to remote solar pump setups, the team delivers tailored solutions and fast, reliable service. Whether it’s dairy shed upgrades, effluent management, or stock water systems, Canterbury Water Services is ready to support Canterbury farmers with their year-round water needs.
