Production Animal Veterinarian Simon Marshall said personal relationships were key to the practice’s success. “Our farm sizes compared to other regions are smaller and generally owner operated. This means our vets get to know the farmer and the animals well and will pick up early on if there are any issues. It is the same for companion animals. “All our vets have areas of expertise and farms that they focus on so there is a real personal relationship and they know the farms well. They will attend to any sick animal to investigate as quickly as possible. If milk quality is a concern they can help investigate underlying issues. “With lame cows we can look at prevention and treatment with the farmers. We have a ‘Wopa’ hydraulic crate that can help them back on their feet. “We look at trace element testing and planning and do liver tests as well. We can help with all disease investigations with a lot of different testing.” With Winter upon us cows will be dried off and coming into calving so making sure their dietary requirements are being met is important, he said. “Getting them in the right metabolic state so we are checking minerals and looking for any calf health issues and making sure they have pre –calf vaccines. “Winter is a good time to do your animal health plan as well.” In Dannevirke they have a companion animal department with state of the art facilities. “We have all the equipment that we need and are well staffed with great nurses and the reception staff are amazing.
