Even as sharemilkers, Georgie says they’ve tried to think like longterm owners rather than shortterm contractors, putting time into improvements they’ll now leave behind. “We’ve done planting of trees, we’ve helped with upgrading the effluent, we’ve done the water testing,” she says. “You’re caretakers of the land, so you want to treat it as your own and show that with the kids.” The business performance award reflected financial discipline that’s been years in the making. “For us, that’s a big one,” Georgie says. “To show that we can farm cows, but we’ve got the skill set in there so we’re running a profitable business.” Meanwhile, the CowManager prize now goes with them to South Waikato, giving them two years’ access to the monitoring system on the new farm. Georgie says they’re looking forward to using it to support animal health and reproduction and to make things more efficient for staff as they settle in to a new business. “We want to show [the kids] that if you work hard and get the right people around, you can achieve some really awesome things,” she says. Glenn and Georgie arrived newly married. They leave with three children: (Below) Harry, 6, Max, who just started school, and Zara nearly 2.
