But for the past 15 years the couple's 340-cow Jersey herd has been thriving under a Clean Green E luent Company system that has reshaped how they think about nutrients, compliance and farm productivity. The Wilsons turned to the Clean Green E luent Company after a chance encounter at a Field Day. “We went and caught up with Lindsay and talked to him for about 45 minutes and asked some really hard questions,” says Craig. “I walked away and said to Dad we are going to put that system in aren’t we and Dad agreed.” The appeal was obvious. “Just its simplicity, there's nothing that can really go wrong with it,” says Craig. “A lot of farmers are always shifting irrigators but we don't have to.” The farm runs three large pods and 72 smaller pods delivering liquid at roughly 0.5mm per application. Pod movement is minimal due to low application rates. The automated setup runs on a timer, cycling through a third of the pods at a time. “It's a low-rate application,” explains Craig. “A third of the pods will go for something like seven minutes, then that switches o to the next pods and so on.” Because application rates are so low, the nutrients are absorbed before any run-o can occur, driving impressive pasture responses. “Because we put on such a low rate it goes straight into the plant so we are utilising all the nutrients and mitigating run o issues. The grass really explodes out of the ground and we can grow more silage. We can get 150 bales o one paddock in a good year. Prior we would have got 50 80.” There are animal health bene its too. Heavy e luent applications can create metabolic problems that make paddocks unsuitable for calving but Craig has found the opposite to be true here. “On our paddocks we spread on we can calve on them every year without any problems." Ease of operation has also proved signi icant for farm sta . “It's de initely simpler for sta to use, easier than a traditional system to manage, and we have peace of mind it will do its thing as it should. It's peace of mind for compliance with no danger of over-application.” The Clean Green E luent Company's patented concretelined weeping wall technology removes 35% more solids and nutrients than any competing system tested and is over 1,000 times cleaner than a conventional solids press. It separates liquids from solids through parallel timber weeping walls, capturing the bulk of NPK nutrients in organic humus The system also cuts water use dramatically. While conventional shed-washing typically consumes 50 70 litres per cow per day, it operates on just 15 20 litres. Nothing goes to waste. Currently spreading across 27 hectares, Craig is now laying a further e luent line to bring coverage to around 40 hectares, particularly targeting heavier maize country. The relationship with the company's founder, Lindsay, remains a valued one. “I still ring up and ask his advice.
