Swings + Roundabouts Autumn 2021
TOMORROW GIRL By Vikki Conley Illustrated by Penelope Pratley EK Books; $24.99 Hardback Tomorrow Girl is written like a parable with its main characters being, Tomorrow, Past and Today. The story begins with Tomorrow who is always in a hurry because she doesn’t want to miss out. “You’ll catch up with the next day if you keep rushing” says Tomorrow’s mother. But when Tomorrow meets worrywart Yesterday and trips over thoughtful Today her whole world begins to slow down. One day, Tomorrow met Yesterday. Yesterday was sitting on a bench by herself. ‘Come climb with me,’ said Tomorrow. ‘Quick, let’s go!’ ‘I can’t,’ said Yesterday. ‘I fell the other day. I’ll probably fall again.’ The next time Tomorrow saw the boy, she spoke to his feet. ‘What are you doing up there?’ she said. ‘Shhh. Come and have a look,’ said the boy. ‘I haven’t got time,’ said Tomorrow. ‘Come on. I’ve seen you climb. You’re quick,’ said the boy. ‘Grab my hand… Tomorrow Girl is a quirky tale that is clever in its use of language and which delivers a timely reminder about the importance of mindfulness and allowing ourselves to slow down. With charming illustrations and its deceptively simple text this book is another great example of slowing down, being mindful and a book for both children and adults, 3+.
