The Awhi Warrior Written by Lisa Cherrington & Sarikia Rona Illustrated by Amy Cameron Massey University Press; RRP: $19.99 Paperback The idea for this book came during the time of COVID restrictions, and although we are not experiencing lockdowns, there are still times when we or people we love have to isolate. The book supports whānau and tamariki to manage emotions when separated from loved ones for whatever reason, with the core message being around connection. Connection to the atua, te taiao, to one another, the power of karakia, and an overall holistic approach of connection physically, spiritually and emotionally. In the story a child, Teina, is supported by her Nanny Mihi to get through the hard times of not being able to have a hug with one another through harnessing the power of his ancestors and the spiritual world by engaging with the environment and atua. The illustrations are simple and focus on the emotions of the child. The book has a lot of text, so best for tamariki 4+. Kaiako could possibly also read it in sections to allow discussion and comprehension of these ideas before putting it in practice.
