What do you need to add or remove? is the object heavy or light?” ● Large groups of objects in play areas (blocks, family corner, constructions, etc) to allow for tamariki to make comparisons on their own, redistribute toys and resources during play can support counting and grouping. ● Offer large quantities of small objects to sort, compare or make patterns that differ in perceptual features like colour and shape, ie beading, ephemeral art, natural resources such as shells, stones, or buttons and various art and craft materials (one idea is to offer sample pattern designs as prompts or to copy, but also allow tamariki to create their own pattern making). ● Waiata and rhymes that support counting both addition and subtraction. ● Identifying numbers, patterns and shapes in books, puzzles, clothes and within the overall environment. ● Measuring with rulers or feet or other objects within the environment. ● Shop play ● Baking using measurements. ● Using measurement and volume in water, sand play, etc. ● Offer model pictures to recreate with construction sets but also allow for tamariki to create their own structures using a variety of construction sets. ● Use mathematical language and questioning when describing play, i.e. “How many spades do we have if we take two spades? Can you find a similar shape? How much water is in your drink bottle? Is it heavy or light? Do you have more/fewer blocks? Can you pass me the shovel with the short handle? How many cups does the bucket hold?” ● Follow up questions to ask tamariki to describe their thinking: How do you know? Why do you think that? Tell me about that. Are you sure? How could you check? If you are in a pedagogical leadership position, how are you supporting kaiako to encourage and enhance young tamariki learning in mathematics in both spontaneous play and in intentional teaching? The below bibliography expands on the above ideas and thinking.
