CREATING CONFIDENT EATERS: POSITIVE, GENTLE STEPS FOR PARENTS By Judith Yeabsley The Confident Eater; RRP: $39.00 Paperback Creating Confident Eaters: Positive, gentle steps for parents isn’t the type of book often reviewed in Swings & Roundabouts, with its main audience being parents of children from 2-12 years. But I thought it was worth mentioning, as many of you may have fussy eaters within your early learning centres with parents who are pulling their hair out over the stress of their children eating less and less and of little variety. The book is written by an internationally qualified nutritional therapist and who has spent several years cooking with children with pronounced food fears – and often additional challenges including sensory sensitivities, ASD, ADHD and anxiety. The book isn’t written as a recipe book but as a guide, with many proven strategies and activities to entice young children to eat and offers parents the ability to tackle fussy eating themselves. For example a small section on wraps, there are suggestions such as, even if your child is only eating cheese or a spread, family members can model stuffing the wraps with lamb and feta or roast vegetables and hummus and share the joy eating the wraps. The author then offers ways you can change up the wraps through cooking it in different shapes, adding favourite toppings, cutting into strips to dunk into spreads or traditional dips or toasting the wraps in the oven until super crispy or fill with cheese and bake in the oven or fried like quesadilla. The text is easy-to-read, with large print, pages broken up into sections, accessible illustrations that also break up the text and designed to be read through but also for parents to dip in to. Creating Confident Eaters has also been used by the Ministry of Education for their early years and autism programmes.
