Swings + Roundabouts Spring 2022

E HOA By Gavin Bishop Gecko Press; RRP: $17.99 Board book This simple board book in te reo Māori uses a friendship between a child and their dog to talk about feelings. For those with dogs, you will be familiar with these common emotions a dog can go through, along with the expressions of the people close-by. This is a great book to talk about feelings with our youngest readers. Also available in English, Friend. I AM ANGRY By Michael Rosen Illustrated by Robert Starling Flying Eye Books; RRP: $18.99 Paperback Another book on feelings, this time with a focus on ‘anger’ where the character is very ‘Angry, angry, angry! I’m so angry, I’ll … jump up and down, roll on the ground, make a din, make you spin, throw you in the bin!’. This book is based on a poem the author wrote when he witnessed his own child having some very big emotions and he wanted to explore the idea that anger takes over the whole world, because when you’re very little, being angry is in part about wishing you were bigger, and he wanted the reader to see when reading the book that despite these big feelings it doesn’t last for long. And I just love the ending … where the character goes to bed! For children 2+. BUMBLEBEE By Rachel Weston Illustrated by Deborah Hinde Weston Books; RRP: $22.99 Paperback Readers follow Bumblebee through the seasons witnessing the important role bumblebees’ play and the connection between flowers, bees and the food we eat. Within the story we learn how we humans can have both a devastating and a supportive role in the bees’ survival and our own subsistence through pollination. The simple factual rhyming text and descriptive illustrations allows for children as young as 2+ to learn about bees (alongside a useful fact sheet for older preschoolers) and be inspired to care rather than harm. BIG FEELINGS By Rebekah Ballagh Allen & Unwin; RRP: $29.99 Paperback This is a big book packed with a wide range of emotions to support children to learn to understand their own emotions and how they make them feel and how to manage them. This book can be read right through or dip and read a few different emotions each time depending on who is listening. At the back of the book are strategies and resources to support parents, caregivers or teachers to guide children in how to manage their emotions. Although the book would be useful for your own centre’s bookshelf it is also a great book to share with whānau to lend or to encourage to buy their own. For tamariki 3+. WOOLF By Stephanie Blake Gecko Press; RRP: $18.99 Paperback This book will be ‘loved’ by all young readers, with its similar tone to the authors best-selling picture book ‘Poo Bum’ along with the empowering humour that Woolf offers young children. This book is a twist on the classic cry wolf story, and I just loved the ending that allows Simon to have the last word! If you are looking for a fun book that will have tamariki engaged and begging for a second read along with anticipating the text you won’t be disappointed by this book! For tamariki 2.5+.
