Swings + Roundabouts Summer 2020
PAPATŪĀNUKU HAS A TUMMY ACHE! By A J Copping Illustrated by Renēe Cadigan Copy Press Books; RRP: $22 Papatūānuku Has a Tummy Ache! introduces tamariki to the plight of filling our landfills with toxic non-biodegradable rubbish and encourages tamariki to listen to Papatūānuku (Earth Mother) and make a sustainable difference. To support this message the story links to Māori ‘creation stories’, Papatūānuku and Ranginui (Sky Father), that most young children now know and hear on a regular basis in many early learning centres. Papatūānuku has a tummy ache and Ranginui due to the pain he can see his wife, Papatūānuku, is in starts to cry. As the tears fall (rain), the awa (rivers) flood, and finally Papatūānuku pukes, with rubbish reaching the ocean. What can be done? The tamariki lay down quietly on the cool green grass, their ears to the ground and listened to Papatūānuku’s puku. “Sssssshh!” and then they jumped up. The children called, “We wll stop putting all that rubbish into your tummy and help you Papatūānuku. We will find a way.” With te reo Māori and a te ao Māori perspective woven in to the story, this book is a great resource for early learning centres to create and sustain sustainable practices with tamariki and work toward restoring balance to our planet. At the back of the book are tips for whānau and early learning centres to support their sustainable journey when reducing rubbish and encouraging composting. The illustrations compliment the book with their simple beauty, particularly Papatūānuku as she lays forlorn and unwell. A book for tamariki 3+.
