But one Monday night, with a whoosh and a whirl, her comfortable life was turned upside-down. Pearl’s family home in Puketapu, in Hawke's Bay, was destroyed by Cyclone Gabrielle and it took a week for her to be reunited with her family, as the community came together in the aftermath of one of New Zealand's worst weather events. Every copy sold will raise much-needed funds for the Hawke's Bay Foundation to assist in the Cyclone Gabrielle recovery effort. This book is a great resource for both tamariki who have experienced this wild weather as well as articulate what happened and can happen in an extreme weather event relatable. ABIGAIL AND THE MAKING OF THE MOON Written by Matthew Cunningham Illustrated by Sarah Wilkins Picture Puffin; RRP: $21.00 Paperback Abigail and the Making of the Moon is the third story in Abigail’s search for answers, following on from Abigail and the Birth of the Sun (winner of Best Picture Book Award) and Abigail and the Restless Raindrop. This time Abigail is curious about how the moon is formed and how it says closely connected with Earth in the sky. This is a truly beautiful story, both the text and the vibrant illustrations. The text offers a scientific answer but does so in a gentle personifying and descriptive style that young children will relate to. Tamariki from 3+ will enjoy this story about a curious thinker – attributes we encourage in all our tamariki! The sense of magic, along with lots of repeated phrases, and gorgeous illustrations really draw the reader in. For tamariki 3+.
