REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Affinity Imaging is a relatively new addition to Wellington’s medical imaging capacity having opened its first facility in Lower Hutt in 2023. That was soon followed by a second in Johnsonville in 2024 and the third in 2025 is part of the new Southern Cross campus in Newtown, taking up around a quarter of its 2500sqm footprint. Radiology facilities have their own technical requirements which adds another element to their construction. In this case they were in the competent hands of Naylor Love who were already building the Southern Cross building and successfully tendered for the Affinity Imaging fit-out with the additional considerations that come with the highly specialised machinery to be installed on its two levels. “The MRI machine (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) on the ground floor weighs nearly three ton so it’s very heavy with a relatively small footprint which is why it’s on the ground floor, and the CT (Computed Tomography) machine is also very heavy and bulky,” says Bart Pepper, Affinity Imaging’s General Manager since December 2023. “It only fitted within the lift doors by millimetres and was just under the maximum weight tolerance. “So, there were considerations on the strengthening of the foundations and on delivery pathways of how to get a rather large machine from outside to inside on the first floor. “Equally the MRI had to come through a window because the building was already built, but it had been pre-empted with windows that could be removed to allow a multi-ton magnet to be craned inside.” The specialist design completed by radiology shielding and design experts ACEPT, (which included lead shielding in the walls to ensure the safe operation of both the CT and X-Ray machines and copper caging for the MRI machine) combined with the build and fit-out by Naylor Love, to deliver the facility ahead of schedule with minimal disruption to existing services as the Affinity Imaging facility took shape. Affinity Imaging had their own hoops to jump through before they could start using the purpose-built premises, including a Medical Physicist checking to make sure the lead and copper shielding was up to standard and radiation levels safe for both staff and patients, and getting their accreditation for Medical Imaging from IANZ (International Accreditation New Zealand). Bart says the resulting facility is well worth what it took to get there “Quality is fundamental to what we do in our practice. The building is part of Southern Cross Hospital’s campus in Wellington; everything is top class, and we work in closely with the other tenants.” Andy Hunter COUNTRY, LIFESTYLE & FARM SALES 027 449 5827 EASTERN REALTY LTD, BAYLEYS, LICENSED UNDER THE REA ACT 2008 for all your Rural & Lifestyle property needs Contact Andy Hunter
