Made by joining wood segments with industrial adhesives, Nathan says that laying the concrete slab, keeping the glulam dry, and completing the roofing presented significant challenges for the construction team, which numbered around 120. The cladding timber was sourced locally and treated overseas and, from a building quality perspective, it means the cladding should require no maintenance for more than 50 years. Other features of the project included upgraded mechanical systems zoned for infection control, secure ambulance access and a covered linkway connect the unit to the main hospital campus. The architectural design, led by Jacobs Architecture and CCM Architects, drew inspiration from the surrounding mountain ranges — the Ruahines, Tararuas and Remutakas. Natural light is an important aspect of the building, and four internal courtyards create a welcoming and therapeutic environment.
