McGuinness, Aquaheat New Zealand was responsible for delivering a full Mechanical service package including Ventilation, chilled & heating networks, refrigeration, infection control systems, BMS controls and an ongoingmaintenance package. Workingaround the public, patients and staff as they came and went from the hospital campus. All mechanical services were installed within a trafficable roof space where all trades could maintain plant and equipment without making contact with patients and staff, this included the COVIDspecific systems incorporated to meet evolving healthcare requirements. Aquaheat worked closely with the head contractor through regular site coordination to manage design changes, maintain programme certaintyand ensure the highest standards of quality and safety. TelcoSpec is a respected leader in New Zealand’s telecommunications industry. Established in 2005, TelcoSpec designs, manages and delivers fibre optic networks and other specialised network infrastructure services, providing turnkey solutions designed to ensure optimal performance and reliability. A recent landmark project for TelcoSpec involved working alongside construction firm LT McGuinness on a new acute mental health unit at Palmerston North Hospital. The new 28-bed unit, which opened last September, provides a safe, therapeutic environment to support faster patient recovery. TelcoSpec delivered a comprehensive suite of services for the unit including structured cabling, fibre integration, commissioning services and the deployment of a seamless network infrastructure. “We installed over 700 data outlets in AMHU facility,” says Len Carney, TelcoSpec Contracts/Systems Manager. “The infrastructure is designed to support various key functions like security control (camera, intercom and door access), patient and staff safety systems such as Nurse Call (duress for patient monitoring) and building maintenance systems (BMS) that require connectivity to IP-based systems.” In a sensitive anti-ligature environment like an acute mental health unit, walls and ceilings need to be kept clear of hardware, devices and components to protect both staff and patient safety. An example of the smart solution approach deployed by TelcoSpec involved installing wireless access points in ceiling spaces, (as opposed to directly on the ceiling). “That was challenging because it wasn’t until the wireless access points were operating that signal strength and ultimately device connectivity could be verified. Initially, we put in 22 wireless access points. Following completion, it was determined that signal strength was poor in some areas. Consequently, extra data outlets had to be installed to eliminate any dead spots.” As Len observes, projects like this invariably evolve following handover and once staff start using systems. It has been a highly complex, two-and-a-half-year journey for all involved. “Relationships hold the key to success on these types of projects; LT McGuinness were really good to work with. Their team managed the different trades and the different project requirements - presented at various times - very well. They certainly assisted us in keeping on track and with understanding what was ahead of us.” Built-in redundancy, along with integration into the hospital’s existing communications infrastructure, was also delivered successfully by TelcoSpec to ensure network resilience. TelcoSpec is much more than a structured cabling company. This project was an extension of TelcoSpec’s core business operations and service capabilities. “We operate extensively in OSP (outside plant) telecommunications settings across diverse, challenging and often remote sites.
